Enlarging an image project – final thoughts (check and log)

How successful were you in copying the lines from the smaller squares to the larger squares?

I had difficulties with the difference in scale between the small squares and the larger squares. This is something I am aware of and intend to work on.

Are you satisfied with your larger replica of the image? What would you do differently another time?

I am fairly satisfied with both images. The two issues I could highlight are the scaling problem (mentioned above), which distorted the tin in the simple flat image exercise, and the enlarged image tends to be less smooth than the original. I assume it is due to the way I copied the squares individually. It may be worth trying to keep an eye on a complete shape at the same time as working on individual squares.

This exercise was similar to the previous one with the exception that the subject was more complicated. I chose a tin (a Gruffalo tin!), a notebook and an old mobile phone.

I feel the result was more successful than the previous mug drawing. I paid more attention to the scale between the two sets of squares. Although again I had slight difficulties in this area I feel I have improved slightly with practise. The angle of the enlarged tin is slightly distorted from the original but this is again due to a mistake in the scale (the lid is too far down in the enlarged drawing). Something I need to be careful of when doing this type of drawing.

In summary this is a great, simple way to enlarge a drawing.

Enlarging an image project – enlarging an existing drawing

This exercise involved drawing a thumbnail sketch of a simple object (I chose a mug) and then by using a grid, drawing a larger version of the same drawing.

I do not have an acetate grid so I had to draw the lines on the drawing. At least it will help me remember how I did it when I look back over my work!

The exercise was fairly straightforward. The main areas I had a problem with were the ellipses at the top and bottom of the mug. They did not look smooth in the enlarged version as I was doing it square by square. Also, I had difficulties with the scale on the larger version. The straight edges of the mug are too close to the edge of the square. The rest of the drawing was ok I feel.
